The prize jury described Juslin Maunula’s work as idea-driven, holistic, confident, and clearly aesthetic.

According to the jury, Juslin Maunula’s designs are not limited by scale or materials. Instead, the duo is easily able to transform and scale their ideas into a variety of forms, be it clothes, home textiles, or spatial installations. The studio’s expression is very rich thanks to influences from architecture and visual arts, which the duo skillfully infuse into even their more commercial commissions.

The jury especially praised the studio for its ability to look at colors and materials without preconceived notions of how they should be paired.

“We combine colors and materials into works that allow the product and the space to converse.”

“We combine colors and materials into works that allow the product and the space to converse,” says Laura Juslin. “Our approach is about tying together materials, structures and colors into three-dimensional forms, usually, but in a way that shows our specific combination of skills and backgrounds. The most important elements in our works are the colors and the materials.”

The Young Designer of the Year 2022 prize exhibition is open to the public at Glasshouse Helsinki 5–28 May 2022 as a part of the DFF Awards exhibition.
