The cheerful Iittala X minä perhonen series is designed to spark joy in the everyday. The objects in the collection feature a pattern hand-sketched by Minagawa, whose sympathetic bird figures remind us to see beauty in every moment, even in the midst of our busy everyday lives.

Akira Minagawa

Akira Minagawa (b. 1967) is a Japanese textile designer and illustrator, best known as the founder of the minä perhonen design company. In addition to his own brand, Minagawa has also designed textiles for Kvadrat of Denmark and Klippan of Sweden, among others.

Founded in 1995, minä perhonen manufactures clothing and upholstery fabrics with naive and imaginative prints as well as various design items. The brand name, minä perhonen, is Finnish for “I butterfly”. According to Minagawa, who has named Finland as one of his favourite countries, the name was chosen simply by flicking through a dictionary: “minä” stands for the designer himself, and the word “perhonen”, added later to the name, is a reference to the myriad of patterns adorning a butterfly’s wings – Minagawa’s idea has always been to create fabrics as beautiful and diverse as the wings of a butterfly.
