Woodnotes
Woodnotes is a Finnish design company founded in 1987 by textile artist Ritva Puotila together with her son Mikko Puotila. The original idea behind Woodnotes was to create contemporary design using a traditional, ecological and durable natural material: paper yarn. Over the years, Woodnotes has expanded its collection from paper yarn rugs to include furniture and other interior design products, yet paper yarn still holds a central place in the company’s production.

Woodnotes – a pioneer of contemporary Finnish design
Founded in Helsinki in 1987, Woodnotes has followed its own uncompromising path from the very beginning. Textile artist Ritva Puotila had a bold vision: to combine the rugged beauty of Finnish nature, artistic ambition and industrial expertise using renewable natural materials. Woodnotes is especially known for its timeless paper yarn rugs, perfectly suited to both private homes and demanding public spaces.
Since 2022, Woodnotes has been working in collaboration with the Finnish furniture brand Nikari.
From paper yarn to design rugs
Woodnotes was the first design company to reimagine paper yarn as a modern material for functional interior textiles – valuing its inherent qualities rather than using it as a substitute for other fibers.
Ritva Puotila chose paper yarn for its unique properties: derived from wood, it’s a renewable natural material with a dense fiber structure that makes the end products durable, hygienic and easy to care for. Thanks to its dust-repellent nature, Woodnotes paper yarn rugs are also an excellent choice for allergy-prone homes.
Eco-friendly quality from Finland to the world
Today, Woodnotes is an internationally recognized and award-winning brand, with 70% of its production exported abroad. One of its most iconic pieces is the K Chair by Harri Koskinen, designed in 2004, which quickly gained status as a modern design classic.
Sustainability is second nature to Woodnotes. All products are biodegradable, and the paper yarn used is made without chlorine gas and dyed without heavy metals or harmful substances. Close cooperation with a local spinning mill, weaving mill and their own sewing workshop enables ongoing product development with a strong focus on both quality and environmental responsibility.
