The Moominvalley art mug from Arabia features Tove Jansson’s colourful aquarelle that was published on the cover of Moumine Le Troll in 1968. Created originally for the book Finn Family Moomintroll, the motif was chosen for the mug together with the Tampere Art Museum and a representative of the city of Tampere from a large collection of Jansson’s artworks she had donated to the museum in the 1980’s. The ceramic mug is unique in two ways: its illustration is a reproduction of an original piece of art, and the aquarelle’s 27 shades make it an exceptionally colourful Moomin mug. The Moominvalley mug is a beautiful utilitarian object that infuses art in everyday life.
First pieces of Arabia’s Moomin tableware came out already in the 1950s, and the large-scale production began in 1990. All the illustrations are done by Tove Slotte who draws inspiration from the original drawings by Tove Jansson. The form of the collection comes from Arabia’s timeless, ceramic Teema tableware designed by Kaj Franck.
