Bernard Schottlander created the Mantis series of lamps in England in 1951. Mantis lamp is a combination of flexibility and balance – they capture the feeling of movement. The beautifully shaped Mantis is both solid and empty in a unique way. Schottlander was originally from Germany but moved to England in 1939 at the age of 15. He worked as a welder in a factory and studied sculpture at the Leeds College of Art. Both welding skills and sculpture studies has influenced to his creative output.
