Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi (1930–2026) is a Finnish textile artist renowned for her bold graphic expression and minimalist yet distinctive fashion collections. She graduated as a ceramic artist from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1952 and initially worked for Arabia and the Nuutajärvi glassworks. Just a year later, she joined Marimekko as a designer.
During the 1950s, Eskolin-Nurmesniemi created several iconic Marimekko classics, including the Jokapoika shirt, launched in 1956. In 1964, she founded her own namesake brand Vuokko, through which she developed timeless, characterful garments with a focus on everyday wear.
Over the course of her long career, Eskolin-Nurmesniemi has received numerous international accolades, including the Lunning Prize in 1964, the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1969, and the Prince Eugen Medal in 1986. She was named Fashion Artist of the Year in 2001, and in she was awarded the honorary title of Academician of Art. Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi passed away in Helsinki on Sunday, 19 April 2026, at the age of 96.
