This fall’s interior trends bring shades of brown, natural materials and beautiful layers
Layers of time bring warmth and comfort to a home, and art makes an interior personal.
FOR SOME TIME NOW, personality has been the buzzword in interior design. This trend is showing up strongly again this coming season, and hopefully it’s here to stay.
Instead of perfectly matched furniture sets, interiors are being spiced up with small, surprising contrasts: heirloom pieces, personal art and furniture that spans different eras. A home becomes a collection of new and old, of design and DIY, of honest, unfussy materials and objects in interesting dialogue with each other. In the end, the most current homes are actually fairly timeless, shaped around the style and needs of the people living in them.

Classic elements elevate a home and bring timeless harmony.
Audo Copenhagen's Torso table lamp is a captivating combination of durable ceramic and linen.
At the same time, classic elements are making a strong comeback. You can see this in the growing use of textiles like curtains and bed linens, in furniture with hood like upholstery, in classic fabric lampshades, and in small objects that draw on timeless forms. A round, narrow necked vase filled with short cut flowers, for instance, is thoroughly chic!
We’ve also noticed how classic blue and white ties together table settings that mix tableware from different eras and collections, working as a connecting thread throughout.

Shapes
Contrast and a certain sense of opposition also run through the shapes of the season: round, soft lined interiors are broken up with sharp, angular forms, and massive furniture pieces are balanced out with featherlight counterparts. These small contrasts can lighten up the whole space and help the right details stand out. The result is a look that feels both balanced and interesting to take in.

Smaller objects are all about one-of-a-kind finds, sourced from an antique store or an artisan's workshop.
Materials also play up the season’s silhouettes: steel adds crispness to sharp lines, while a substantial table gains presence through shapely solid wood.
In smaller objects, a handmade feel and slightly raw look have real appeal, even when the piece is mass produced. Surfaces carry decorative detail and color, while glass objects bring a lively sense of three dimensionality.
Cool metal looks its best paired with warm wood.
Materials
The material palette still leans cool: steel and other cold metals remain strong into the fall season. The most current combination pairs steel with warm wood, each beautifully setting off the other. Solid wood pieces remain popular, both in dining sets and in fitted furniture at home, with classic oak joined by medium brown stained tones.

Natural materials have secured a place that feels almost unshakeable, across both hard and soft materials. Wool, linen, natural stone, jute and sisal are all current choices again this fall, and they’re sure to hold their place in seasons to come.
Crisp white bedding freshens up generous wood surfaces. The most current shade of blue is beautifully muted.
Colors
The color world of interiors is softening. Instead of bright accent colors, space is opening up for gradual, muted tones. That doesn’t mean monotony, though: rather than head to head beige, the current palette is nuanced and full of character, just a touch more subtle and alive than before.

Brown remains the single most current shade, and it suits the season perfectly. It’s paired with soft, broken white tones, deep burgundy and wine red, and when a bit of freshness is needed, a muted pale blue.
An autumn harvest gathering calls for a checked tablecloth, of course.
Patterns
When it comes to patterns, rhythmic motifs are especially on trend. Checks are an essential seasoning in both fall fashion and fall interiors. Stripes remain popular too, though instead of bold block stripes, we’re seeing more classic, understated striped patterns.

Artek's classic Zebra fabric is a showstopper in its new brown shade, too.
Animal prints are still on the rise, taking on slightly softer, fall inspired tones this season. Patterns are mixed with a relaxed hand, avoiding anything too matchy matchy. Often they work best as seemingly unplanned finishing touches, the detail that pulls an interior together.
