Sibast | Dining chairs

Danish furniture manufacturer Sibast was established in 1908, when Peder Olsen Sibast opened his small carpenter’s workshop in the Danish countryside. His son Helge Sibast was born the same year. Helge grew up with the workshop, and in the 1940s he and his siblings Ole and Emma took over the company. Besides a carpenter, Helge also proved to be a skillful designer, and his designs, such as the Sibast chairs No 7 and 8, made Sibast Furniture famous also outside of Denmark. In the 1950s Sibast collaborated successfully with the Danish furniture designer Arne Vodder, and in the 1960s Sibast chairs made their way even to the White House.

In 1984 Sibast Furniture was sold by the Sibast family, but Helge Sibast’s daughters retained the copyrights for his designs. In 2012, Ditlev and Anna Sibast, Helge Sibast’s grandson and his wife, relaunched Sibast Furniture. The new collections include Helge Sibast’s original works and fresh designs that pay respect to the company’s core values: high-quality craftsmanship and well-thought design.

This brand has collaborated with: Helge Sibast, Anna & Ditlev Sibast, Piet Hein, Kasper Eistrup, Arne Vodder, Naja Utzon Popov

Dining chairs from Scandinavia and beyond

Dining chairs are among the most important chairs in your house. Dining room chairs invite the family to gather together during breakfasts, dinners and suppers, and in most homes, dining chairs are in active use also outside the meals. The design of a dining table chair requires exceptional durability, comfortability and adaptability, and that's a good reason to invest in high-quality, timeless design. Well-designed dining chairs provide a straight yet comfortable seating posture, and their dimensions have been designed to fit people of various ages and sizes. In public spaces, for example in restaurant use, stackability of the chair is a definite plus – a pile of stacked chairs is easy to store in a small space.

The best dining chairs are a balanced combination of functional qualities and intriguing aesthetics – they have been designed to stand the test of time, both with their structure and appearance. The most common materials of Scandinavian dining chairs include wood, metal, plastic, rattan and different combinations of these. The seat might be upholstered in fabric, leather or velvet, or woven from linen webbing. Colourful dining chairs are a great way to spice up the decor of the dining area or neutral-toned dining table, and, respectively, strong colours of the interior can be balanced with black, white or grey dining chairs. Feel free to use your imagination – you can mix together chairs in different tones, or why not even several types of chairs.
