Louisiana Museum of Modern Art’s Crinoideae blue poster features a drawing by German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel, which was originally published in his iconic volume Nature’s Art Forms (1899–1904). With delicate lines and intricate detail, Haeckel’s illustrations demonstrate that scientific exploration can be artistically captivating and beautiful, too. The original poster was published as part of Louisiana’s major 2024 exhibition OCEAN, which explored humanity’s complex relationship with the sea – a realm both familiar and profoundly mysterious. This poster is printed on special Sirio Pearl Oyster Shell paper, which gives the surface a subtle, pearlescent sheen.

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German biologist and visionary who bridged the worlds of science and art through his precise illustrations of microscopic organisms, jellyfish and marine life. His masterpiece Kunstformen der Natur (Nature’s Art Forms, 1899–1904) celebrates the beauty and structures found in the natural world.
