Designer
Petri Vainio (born 1964) is a Finnish interior architect and designer who graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1992. He is also the founder of Doctor Design, a brand especially known for its lighting fixtures based on a freely hanging textile spiral that filters the light softly and pleasantly. In addition to illuminating private homes, the ethereal spirals are ideal for light art – Vainio's luminaires can be admired in numerous public spaces in Finland, such as the Jyväskylä Art Museum, the Heureka Science Center in Vantaa and the Amos Rex Art Museum in Helsinki.
While perhaps best known for the lamp designs for his own company, Vainio has also collaborated with the brand Showroom Finland, among others. An expert in veneer pressing techniques, he has received praise for his organically shaped plywood objects, whose forms, at first sight, make them seem more like plastic than bent wood. Vainio has stated plywood as one of his favorite materials.
