Hans-Agne Jakobsson

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a Swedish interior and furniture designer, who ran his own company since 1951. Jakobsson was especially famous for his lighting designs, which often had a softly glowing light and organic shape. His designs were inspired by great, modern Scandinavian designers such as the Finnish icon Alvar Aalto and Danish lighting master Poul Henningsen.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson – a pioneer of Swedish lighting design

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a Swedish interior architect and furniture designer, best known for his modern lighting creations from the 1950s and 1960s. A strong foundation in craftsmanship shaped his distinctive and enduring design language.

Career and international breakthrough

Jakobsson qualified as a master carpenter at just 18 and later studied architecture in Gothenburg. He worked as an industrial designer for General Motors before founding his own company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Småland in 1951. The company’s move to the centre of Markaryd in 1956 helped accelerate its international success.

The brass lamps produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB became some of the company’s most iconic pieces, while his glass and wooden designs also gained widespread popularity. The glass shades were mouth-blown in Småland’s glassworks, and the products were exported not only across the Nordic countries but around the world.

A philosophy of light

Jakobsson’s lighting is defined by its generous yet softly diffused glow, creating a calm, glare-free atmosphere. Every detail mattered to him – he once noted that “every part of a lamp should spark the designer’s interest”.

Today, Jakobsson’s designs can be found in the collections of Sweden’s Örsjö, Denmark’s Warm Nordic and Finland’s Vaarnii.
