Bjørn Wiinblad

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was a Danish artist who began his career as a typographer but grew into a cherished figure in Danish art across various materials and formats. A unique loner in Danish art, Wiinblad's lavish and vibrant works stood apart from the minimalist Nordic modernism of his time. Guided by the principle of bringing joy to people, his colourful, ornamental and often oriental-inspired pieces exemplified this sentiment.

Wiinblad is best known for his ceramics, particularly his romantic female figures and the blue and black plates popular in the 1960s and 70s Denmark. However, his creative pursuits extended far beyond that: he ventured into designing scenography, costumes, posters, stamps, and even decorated restaurants and entire cruise ships. The artist also travelled extensively, exhibiting his work worldwide. Wiinblad lived and worked until his death in Lyngby the legendary Blue House, decorated like an Aladdin's cave. Today, the Blue House offers visitors a vivid glimpse into his daily life and the wellspring of his inspirations.
