Description

The Parasol coffee table by Maze emphasizes the core aspects of the Swedish brand’s design philosophy: it is simultaneously playful and practical. Conceived by Finnish master cabinetmaker Antrei Hartikainen, the simple and unadorned design is inspired by ponds and water lilies. It features a clever construction of wood and metal that creates the illusion of the tabletop floating over the base – like water lily leaves that float on the surface of the water.

The name of the coffee table, Parasol, refers to sunshades, playfully nodding to the table’s structure. The wooden base doubles as a storage basket for books, children’s toys or earphones and remote controls, with the items covered by the tabletop as if it were a parasol. To achieve the challenging structure, Maze and Hartikainen teamed up with the Swedish manufacturer Steel Nova, whose expertise came in handy in creating a stable construction that reflects Hartikainen’s vision.

The Parasol coffee table is a great example of furniture that strikes the perfect balance between fun and functional, clever and clean-lined. Therefore, it is just as easy to envision in a compact urban apartment as it is in the lounge space of a lavish boutique hotel.

Antrei Hartikainen

Antrei Hartikainen (b. 1991) is a Finnish master cabinetmaker and designer who explores the many uses and possibilities of wood in a distinctive and deeply personal way. The son of a carpenter, Hartikainen has spent his entire life surrounded by wood.

He has received several design awards, and in 2018 he was named Young Designer of the Year by Design Forum Finland.

Antrei Hartikainen: At the crossroads of woodcraft and art

Antrei Hartikainen is a Finnish master cabinetmaker who graduated from the Salpaus Further Education Centre in 2013 and is known for his refined wooden objects and sculptural design language. His work often moves between the worlds of design and art, highlighting a deep respect for materials, exceptional craftsmanship and the natural qualities of wood.

Sculptural wooden design

Antrei Hartikainen’s approach is rooted in an intimate understanding of wood as a material. His design language is at once playfully artistic and beautifully minimal, with every piece shaped through a dialogue with the wood’s natural grains, surfaces and structures. Sensuous forms, gentle harmony and meticulous finishing are all hallmarks of Hartikainen’s work.

International recognition

Hartikainen’s works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, and his career has also gained international acclaim. Among other honours, he has received awards at the Scandinavian Design Awards, Red Dot Design Awards as well as the Rising Talent Award at the Maison&Objet fair.

Hartikainen’s Kukkii sculpture series was named Product of the Year at the 2017 Muoto Gala, and the Verso salad servers won the Golden A’ Design Award in the same year. In 2018, he was also named Young Designer of the Year in Finland.
