Drops table, white oil oak
Description
Aakjaer Furniture's Drops table brings the functional spirit of Danish design to the living room or bedroom. The slender oak side table stands on three legs and is far more practical than its small size indicates.
The tabletop uses intarsia, a marquetry technique dating back to the Renaissance. Intarsia is usually known for its lavish floral patterns, but Danish designer Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen went the other way entirely, letting the natural grain of the wood do the talking. Originally designed in the 1960s, the Drops returned to production in 2023, and the design has hardly aged a day. The table offers a handy storage space and keeps magazines, books, and small decorative pieces close at hand.

Jørgen Aakjær Jørgensen (1920–2008) was a Danish carpenter and furniture designer of the old school. He earned his journeyman's certificate from the Danish Technological Institute and was awarded a bronze medal for his craftsmanship. Later, his career took him to Sweden to learn new techniques, and it was there that he picked up intarsia, the old wood inlay technique that became the signature of his work.
Jørgensen founded Møbelintarsia together with his wife in 1948. His furniture came about without drawings of any kind, which is why each piece rests on an instinctive feel for form and function. Today his legacy is carried on by Aakjaer Furniture, founded by his granddaughter Nanna Aakjær.
