The low bookcase from Normann Copenhagen's Fyr series offers storage space in a minimalist Scandinavian style. Designed by Yuchen Wu, the streamlined open shelf is quite a multifunctional piece of furniture: it can be used as storage furniture, a TV stand or even a bench, as the shelf is sturdy enough to be used for seating.
The Fyr series is named after its material – "fyr" is Danish for pine. The bookshelves are made of thick pine planks, whose surface is dotted with knots characteristic of pine wood. Typically for the designer, these details are seen as an essential part of the material rather than something that should be covered up. Instead of a thick layer of paint, the shelving unit has been finished with a UV matte varnish, which allows the natural beauty of the pine tree to be seen in all its splendour and natural variability. In addition to the surface texture, it is typical for pine wood to patina over time, and the shade of the shelf will slowly change to a beautiful honey-like tone.
