Description

GUBI's SW50 sofa represents Danish modernism at its purest. Designed by Illum Wikkelsø in 1959, the charm of the sofa lies in a contrast: plump, generous cushions resting on a handcrafted oak frame with slender, rounded legs. Wikkelsø created the sofa for Søren Willadsens Møbelfabrik as part of its lounge collection, and lounging really is what this four-seater does best, with foam-filled seat and back cushions wrapped in a soft cotton blend fabric.

The SW50 sofa has a film credit to its name, too. A red version appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film Le Mépris, starring Brigitte Bardot. So if your living room could use a little cinematic glamour without sacrificing an ounce of function, the SW50 sofa is a very good place to start.

Illum Wikkelsø

Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) was a furniture designer and one of the central figures of Danish modernism. He trained first as a cabinetmaker and went on to study furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. His career began in the 1940s, and he soon became known for clean-lined, practical furniture that often drew on wood and leather.

Wikkelsø designed chairs, sofas, and tables alike, and many of them are still in production today. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and original pieces are now wanted pieces sought after by collectors.
