Bright ideas for dark days – the most inspiring new products of the month

Unda vases and lamps designed by Sabine Marcelis, arranged on the coffee table in the bright living room

Designed by Dutch artis Sabine Marceli, the Unda collection includes both vases and lamps.

Not to alarm anyone, but the nights are drawing in again. No need to fear, though: our five new arrivals are each doing their bit to help you make the most of the darkening evenings.

The Unda lamp takes its name from the Latin word for wave.

Making waves

A lamp is the obvious answer to the dark, but Iittala's new Unda collection offers plenty more to marvel at. Designed by the Dutch artist Sabine Marcelis, the Unda range is her take on one of nature's small wonders, one most of us will have admired at least once on a summer day: the moment sunlight meets the surface of water and begins to dance on the waves.

The soft light filtering through the Unda table lamp's mouth-blown glass brings that little spectacle straight into your home. It is also a reminder, in the thick of autumn, that summer always comes around again.

The star of the Silk Lantern is the shade the luminaire is named after: a lantern in silk, glowing softly and ambiently.

Soft as silk

GUBI's new Silk Lantern lamp gives a slightly different material the chance to shine: silk. Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen's design was first shown at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1951, but it never made it into production. Luckily, good things come to those who wait!

The Silk Lantern is available as a wall, floor, and ceiling lamp, so all that's left to do is pick your favorite and settle into the soft, warm glow of Japanese lanterns.

HAY's colorful Pattern candles brighten up a room on their own or grouped together in a cluster.

A gentler glow

If you're after a light even gentler than a light bulb's, our Danish friend HAY has new candles in cheerful colors. Pair the geometric designs of the Pattern collection with the Flare candleholder in shiny steel, and the prettiest arrangement of the season comes together just like that.

Nobodinoz's Ziggy beanbag combines the laid-back comfort of a beanbag with the inviting shape of a lounge chair.

Soft landing into the fall

There is no seat more comfortable than a beanbag chair, and Nobodinoz's Ziggy is a fine case in point. Its wonderfully plump shape is only part of the appeal, because the playful cover with its relaxed stripes is just as much of a draw. The organic cotton cover can be removed and washed whenever needed.

Set the armchair beanbag in the living room, next to the bookshelf or by the record player, and settle in. Thanks to its light construction, the Ziggy also moves easily from room to room.

Muun's thick MK2 Continental mattress has the same luxurious feel as the beds in high-end hotels.

The mattress comes in different firmness levels, so you can choose the one that best suits the way you sleep – or even pick a different firmness for each side.

The Sandman’s best pal

When nothing else helps against the dark, it may be time to hibernate. Danish Muun shows how it's done: the design brand focuses on sleep, and its bed frames, mattresses, pillows and duvets are created in collaboration between designers, experienced craftspeople and sleep researchers. Bears have always known a thing or two about sleep, but few of them have slept this stylishly.
