Lighting up the dark season – the most inspiring new products of the month

Tala’s Heath table lamp brings a soft, warm glow to darker mornings.

The darkest days of the year are knocking at the door once again, which is why our October arrivals are all about one thing: beating the dark. If the winter blues start to get the better of you, let these five come to the rescue.

The Heath lamp brings a soft glow to a bedside table, desk, or living room, for example.

Filtered through fabric

There’s nothing quite as atmospheric as light filtering through cotton. Tala’s Heath table lamp pairs a delicately pleated, petal-like shade with a tubular ceramic base that takes its cue, somewhat unexpectedly, from the old Victorian chimney pots on London’s rooftops. It’s easy to picture this charming lamp lighting up both homes and public spaces alike.

Formarkivet’s portable Aglow table lamp brings together sculptural shapes and the elegance of brushed steel.

A multitasker for fall evenings

Portable lamps are wonderfully versatile, since you can carry them from room to room whenever the mood calls for it. Formarkivet’s cordless Aglow lamp is one of the most capable of the bunch: its IP44 rating means it’s just as happy on the patio or in the garden as it is indoors. So if there’s still one last garden dinner on this fall’s calendar, bring this little guy along to light up the table!

Carlo Nason designed the Medusa lamp in 1970, drawing on both Italian modernism and Murano’s glassmaking traditions.

The Medusa is just as charming as a table lamp as it is as a pendant. It’s easy to picture on a nightstand, for example, where it makes a cozy reading light.

The gentlest glow of the dark month

Established & Sons’ Medusa luminaire collection captures the drifting movement of jellyfish in glass. Designed by Carlo Nason, the classic lamp is mouth-blown into soft, flowing layers that melt into one another, with the LED light source tucked away at their center. The translucent opal glass gives the light a gentle character that keeps you company through the dark evenings yet to come.

Iittala’s Element pieces are easy to combine into a larger altar of light, but they work just as well on their own, adding atmosphere to the dinner table or the rest of the home alike.

Around the flame

Never underestimate a candle as a light source: it gives off a surprising amount of light, and twice as much atmosphere! Iittala’s new Element collection grew from the idea of candlelight as a kind of altar – a focal point that brings people together and creates a sense of belonging. The pared-back candleholders make a fitting home for your taper candles and practically invite you to gather around the light and slow down for a moment.

The warm glow of the Leena metal star brings cozy ambience to other corners of the home during Christmas and the winter season.

The coziest light of the winter

As the holiday season draws closer, it’s time to get the seasonal decorations in order. That said, Airam’s Leena star is so charming you may want to leave it in the window all winter long.

The LED star glows with warm light through its beautifully perforated metal surface, which forms a decorative pattern of tiny stars, crescent moons, and angels. What better way to bring a little glow to the winter months?
