The characterful CNC-1 chair is part of the CNC collection, a series that represents Yrjö Kukkapuro’s later work from the 2010s. Visually, however, the chair nods clearly to Kukkapuro’s postmodern design language of the 1980s, where esthetics and ergonomics intertwine in a truly compelling way. The CNC-1 chair features a boldly sculpted birch frame that pairs with a black leather seat, resulting in a piece that feels playful, functional, and at home in various interiors.
The CNC series originated in the early 2000s, when Kukkapuro became fascinated by computer-aided woodworking. CNC milling opened up new possibilities: it allowed precisely cut, almost freely shaped components to be produced with minimal material waste. While the CNC-1 chair stays faithful to the original design, its frame has been raised by 0.79 in (2 cm) and its seat cushions thickened by 0.59 in (1.5 cm) to reflect the increase in average human height. These subtle yet meaningful adjustments enhance comfort and bring this modern classic firmly into the present day.
