Description

Vitra’s Noguchi coffee table, designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1944, unites form and function in a harmonious way. The iconic table is built on two identical wooden elements, which support the rounded tabletop made of thick, durable glass. The sculptural, organic and abstract design of the table is reminiscent of Noguchi’s bronze and marble sculptures, and the Japanese-American designer has considered the table as his best piece of furniture design.

Noguchi designed the first version of the iconic table in 1939 for A. Conger Goodyear, the founder of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The furniture manufacturer Herman Miller asked Noguchi to design a similar table for his own collection – described as a functional sculpture, the Noguchi table was released in the United States in the late 1940s. In Europe, the table is manufactured by Vitra.

Isamu Noguchi

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a Japanese-American artist and landscape architect best known for his sculptures and furniture, including the iconic Noguchi table produced by Vitra.

Noguchi’s work blends sculptural sensitivity with functional clarity – his lighting, furniture and public space designs reflect an aesthetic inspired by organic forms, where material and shape exist in perfect harmony.

Isamu Noguchi – a master of Japanese-American design

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a Japanese-American sculptor and designer whose work moved effortlessly between the worlds of art and design. The son of Japanese poet Yone Noguchi and American writer Leonie Gilmour, he was born in Los Angeles, spent part of his childhood in Japan, studied at Columbia University and New York’s Leonardo da Vinci Art School, and established his own studio in 1927 after receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship.

A bridge between East and West

Early in his career, Noguchi worked in Paris as an assistant to Constantin Brancusi and held his first solo exhibition in New York. He also spent extended periods in Asia, studying brush painting in China and ceramics in Japan.

Like his Japanese father, Noguchi saw himself as an interpreter between East and West – but instead of poetry, his tools were sculpture and design. This dialogue between cultures became one of the defining themes of his work.

Inspired by nature

Noguchi is regarded as a truly universal talent whose creative work spanned sculpture, stage sets, furniture, lighting, interiors, public plazas and gardens.

His organic, nature-inspired design language also had a profound influence on modern design in the 1950s. In 1947, Noguchi began collaborating with American furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, and the collection he developed alongside George Nelson, Charles Eames and Paul László is now considered one of the most influential ensembles in modern furniture design.
