TAF Studio

The Swedish architects Gabriella Lenke and Mattias Ståhlbom have steered the Stockholm-based architecture and design office TAF Studio (formerly TAF Architects) since 2002.

The various manifestations of architecture and the phenomena of everyday life bring the members of TAF Studio endless challenges: the studio aims to make everyday life more exciting through small but effective changes. The starting point is often the realisation that the ordinariness of an object can be precisely the quality that makes it extraordinary.

The Swedish TAF Studio draws inspiration from everyday life

TAF Studio is a Stockholm-based design and architecture studio founded by Gabriella Lenke and Mattias Ståhlbom in 2002, after they graduated from the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design.

The studio works with furniture, lighting and interior architecture, and its design is guided by the idea of reinterpreting everyday objects and spaces through clear yet insightful design. TAF Studio has operated internationally from the very start.

A reinterpreter of familiar surroundings

The starting point of TAF Studio’s design is the observation of the everyday all around: the designers seek to identify the familiar visual codes attached to spaces and objects and reshape them into new, easily approachable products.

The result is objects that feel immediately understandable to the user. Structures, materials and colours are often left visible, and scale or context is altered in a way that invites the user to become part of the object and its use.

Scandinavian design with an international touch

TAF Studio has collaborated with several international brands: Muuto, Artek, String Furniture and Skagerak. The products and interior projects they have designed have been seen widely in both commercial spaces and architectural settings, and the studio’s handprint shows strongly across the field of Nordic contemporary design.

In 2017, TAF Studio was honoured with the prestigious Bruno Mathsson Prize, awarded for a significant contribution to the furniture and design field. The studio’s work is on display at the MoMA in New York, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, among others.
