F300 lounge chair

Description

GUBI's F300 lounge chair, designed by French designer Pierre Paulin in the 1960s, is a true design icon. When it was first introduced, the F300 caused quite a stir with its sleek, futuristic lines that seemed to belong to another era. Decades on, the lounge chair's playful, yet modern silhouette still evokes the same sense of innovation, offering a glimpse into the future of design.

While the original F300 armchairs were created from fiberglass or polyurethane, today’s version is made from the eco-conscious HiREK® polymer – an Italian material created from recycled industrial plastic waste. Despite the chair's light weight, the material is incredibly durable and resistant to both UV rays and weather changes without showing signs of wear. The seat of the F300 is upholstered in the high-quality Alberobello Limonta acrylic fabric, which is specially designed for outdoor use.

Pierre Paulin

Pierre Paulin (1927–2009) was a French designer known above all as a pioneer of modern furniture design. Paulin created an extensive collection of modernist chairs, often dominated by organic forms and strong colours. He drew inspiration for his work from Japanese and Scandinavian design as well as the style of Charles and Ray Eames, among other things. In the early stages of his career, Paulin also tried his hand at the automotive industry, ceramics and sculpture.

The family-run design studio Paulin, Paulin, Paulin continues to nurture Pierre Paulin’s legacy in this millennium.

Pierre Paulin – futuristic design from France

Pierre Paulin was a French designer known above all for his sculptural, inventive seating solutions. He studied at the École Camondo in Paris and began his career in the 1950s by experimenting with new materials and structures that emphasised comfort and soft, organic forms.

Paulin’s work brings together ergonomics, an experimental design language and a modern way of life, which is why his furniture quickly became an international design favourite.

An ingenious experimenter

Paulin rose to wide renown while working for the Dutch company Artifort, for which he designed several classics that have left their mark on design history, including the Mushroom, Ribbon and Tongue chairs.

Paulin made bold use of new materials and techniques, such as elastic fabrics and moulded foam structures, which allowed the soft forms of his furniture to be realised in unprecedented ways.

Furniture and architecture

In the 1970s, Paulin expanded his work into interior architecture and designed significant public spaces for the French state, such as the presidential apartments of the Élysée Palace and ministry premises. In these projects, he created cohesive, soft-lined environments where furniture and architecture merged into one.

Paulin’s design is considered a key part of French modernism, and his work lives on strongly through re-editions too – the Danish GUBI, for example, has brought several of his chairs back into production, including the iconic F300 lounge chair.
