Making Space: Interior Design by Women
Description
Making Space: Interior Design by Women, published by Phaidon, is a celebration of 250 women whose work in interior design has shaped both private homes and public spaces from the early 1900s to today. The book brings together designers from more than 50 countries and across a rich spectrum of styles, from rich maximalism to pared-back minimalism.
Making Space represents both widely recognised figures and lesser-known talents, ranging from Rose Uniacke and Kelly Wearstler to Tekla Evelina Severin. Through hundreds of vibrant photographs and inspiring case studies, the book offers a window into their creative thinking and highlights the many ways women have been central to the evolution of interior design.
The history of women’s involvement in interior design is rich and varied. It is a discipline where women enjoy an equal standing with their male counterparts, yet it is typically framed as a design practice especially suited to women, secondary to the heroic role of architect or furniture designer.
This timely survey explores the ways in which women have shaped the built environment beyond the confines of the home, revealing their careers as true tastemakers of the twentieth and twenty-first century. Making Space shines a light on the diverse and influential work of 250 women who design interiors – well-known, unsung, and emerging – from more than 50 countries.
