ALTHOUGH OCTOBER has brought plenty of pleasantly warm, sunny fall days, here in the Nordics preparations for the darkest stretch of the year are already underway.

At home, the focus turns to softness and atmosphere, with autumnal shades on surfaces and enough lamps to carry you through the dark evenings. Finnish Design Shop’s showroom in Turku, Finland, is marking the season with a new display of fall arrivals and updated classics, full of inspiration and timely ideas for a cozy fall home.

The Tank chairs walnut-stained frame is a perfect match for the brown Zebra fabric.

Zebra in a warmer coat

This fall, Artek’s classic Zebra fabric arrives in a new brown-and-white colorway alongside the original graphic black-and-white. The softer look feels made for a fall home.

Woven with a double jacquard technique, the sturdy, hard-wearing Zebra fabric is ideal for upholstery, and it works beautifully on cushions, too. Beyond furniture, the pattern also turns up on Artek’s smaller pieces, from tote bags and pouches to seat cushions.

The clean-lined coffee table makes a great base for both minimal and more layered arrangements.

A play of lines

The streamlined Develius coffee table is a new addition to &Tradition’s popular sofa collection. Made of powder-coated steel, it is slender yet crisp in form, a perfect counterpoint to the season's deep shades and plush textiles. Best of all, it offers plenty of room for your most beautiful coffee table books and other small finds.

Its proportions are designed to work with the Develius sofa modules, so in addition to standing on its own, it can also be slotted between the modules for an Italian-inspired look.

The season’s most delicious color pairing turns up in Fredericia’s classic chair, too.

Audo’s Hashira lamp casts a soft, inviting glow through its raw linen shade.

A classic dressed for fall

Børge Mogensen’s classic The Spanish Chair, designed in 1958, has slipped into a timely shade of brown for the season.

Made by the Danish brand Fredericia, the chair has broad armrests that offer both a sturdy place to lean and a handy surface for a cup of coffee. No separate side table required. The silky, oiled walnut frame echoes the tone of the brown leather upholstery.

Leather meets wood

Leather is having a strong moment in dining chairs as well. Many brands have updated their classics and fall releases with warm brown leather upholstery, and Carl Hansen & Søn is no exception. The perennial favorite Wishbone now comes with a leather seat, giving this instantly recognizable classic a fresh and refined feel.

The options don’t end there. At our showroom, you can also try out the leather-upholstered J39 and Betty chairs, as well as HAY’s new fall release, the Pack chair, also finished in cognac leather. Which one will be your favorite?

The Tile rug’s understated checked pattern creates a beautiful backdrop for earthy tones. The compact modular sofa is Develius by &Tradition.

Quietly graphic

Looking for a rug with a little more going on than a solid color, but nothing too loud? Audo Copenhagen’s Tile rug is an elegant solution. Its rhythmic grid pattern plays out in subtle shades of ivory and linen, leaving room for everything around it.

Combining New Zealand wool and jute, the rug is a natural companion for warm tones. Oak furniture, too, finds a fine match in its soft palette.

The fall textile palette borrows its shades from the candy shop, too.

Greetings from the sofa corner

The season’s most inviting corner comes together with soft cushions and throws. Among Tekla’s fall arrivals are luxuriously soft sheep wool cushions, made from a blend of new and recycled wool and finished with stitching around the edge. It’s a pared-back detail that gives an otherwise simple cushion a little extra character.

As the evenings cool, a throw becomes every cold-footed soul’s most trusted companion, and there are options for lovers of both fuzzy and smoother textures. Sibast’s luxurious Alpaca blanket, woven with alpaca wool, charms with its beautifully earthy tones and invites you to settle in, even on the darkest evenings of the year.
