Description

Fredericia’s J39 chair combines a solid wood frame with a lightly padded seat upholstered in linen canvas. Originally designed in 1947 by Danish architect Børge Mogensen with a paper cord seat, this upholstered version follows the curved lines of the cord weave and is based on Mogensen’s 1969 prototype. With its timeless and natural character, the J39 chair works beautifully as a dining chair, as well as adding warmth and presence to an office or living space.

Mogensen designed the chair originally for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society, which chose Mogensen as its head designer in 1939. FDB’s furniture production began in the 1940s, with the main idea being functionalist and democratic design for the people. As the J39 chair gained popularity, it also earned the nickname ‘The People’s Chair’.

Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) stands among Denmark’s most influential furniture designers and key pioneers of Danish modernism. Having studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Mogensen set out to create pieces defined by functionality, a stripped-back aesthetic and true accessibility. Shortly after graduating, he was appointed head of design at the FDB consumer cooperative, where the mission was clear: to produce practical, durable and affordable furniture for people across all walks of life.

Børge Mogensen – at the heart of Danish modernism

Børge Mogensen’s work is defined by a democratic mindset and an effortless command of human-centred proportions – he believed that great design should serve as many people as possible and stand the test of time.

Mogensen trained as a furniture designer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he studied under the renowned designer and architect Kaare Klint. He graduated in 1942 and began his career shortly afterwards at the FDB consumer cooperative.

Functionality and honest materials

Mogensen’s furniture can be described as both strikingly modest and immensely self-assured, and the same could be said of his personality. His work also reveals influences from folk art, lithography and Japanese woodblock prints.

Mogensen enjoyed working with traditional natural materials, but he was equally keen to explore new techniques and championed efficient industrial furniture production.

A pioneer of Nordic design

Throughout his career, Børge Mogensen collaborated closely with several Danish manufacturers. He is especially known for the furniture originally produced by the FDB consumer cooperative, now manufactured by FDB Møbler. Mogensen’s wooden furniture can also be found in the collections of Fredericia and Carl Hansen & Søn. Mogensen’s thinking had a lasting influence on how Nordic furniture design is understood today.

Over the course of his career, Mogensen received prestigious honours including the Eckersberg Medal and the C.F. Hansen Medal, and in 1972 he was awarded the British distinction Honorary Royal Designer for Industry.
