Take inspiration from your surroundings

One of the easiest ways to start planning a summer table is simply to look around you. The setting itself can become your mood board – whether it’s a garden in full bloom, the changing hues of a lakeside retreat, or the clean, understated surfaces of a city balcony.

Draw colors, textures and details from the landscape around you. A meadow-inspired table might feature soft pastel linens and delicate floral accents, while a rocky shoreline calls for earthy tones, weathered textures and a more pared-back aesthetic.

Keep it effortless

When grilling season arrives, practicality should take centre stage. Instead of your finest linen tablecloth, opt for easy-care placemats that define each place setting while standing up to juicy burgers, grilled vegetables and inevitable spills.

A functional table leaves more time for what matters most: good food and good company. To keep washing up to a minimum, bring dishes and sides to the table on large serving platters. Salads, potatoes and grilled vegetables can happily share the same plate, creating a relaxed, abundant look while reducing the number of dishes in circulation.

This inviting setting grew out of Marimekko’s classic Unikko print, with its mix of soft blue and bright red hues.

Play with patterns

Summer is the season to embrace color and pattern. Bold florals, fruit motifs and other expressive prints instantly bring energy to the table and help tie the overall palette together. For a cohesive look, pick one or two shades and repeat them in your tableware, glassware or decorative details.

Timeless Finnish classics from Marimekko and Arabia remain perennial summer favorites, while brands such as Serax and Alessi offer a more contemporary, international take on decorative tableware.

Tuck natural flowers into Kähler’s wavy Hammershøi Unfold vase, set out a few seashells alongside it, and you've got the makings of a summer table that smells of the sea.

Dress the table with flowers

The most beautiful summer decorations are often found just outside your door. Fill a vase with freshly picked wildflowers, arrange leafy branches along the table, or gather smooth stones and seashells as natural accents.

The choice of vase matters, too. Clear glass allows flowers and greenery to take centre stage, while ceramic vessels bring warmth and an organic softness to the setting. Instead of a single large bouquet, consider clustering several small vases along the table for a more relaxed and playful arrangement.

Heirloom silver rediscovered at the back of a drawer, paired with Arabia’s rose-red Huvila pattern, adds a hit of nostalgia.

Layers of stories

Midsummer is the perfect time to break the rules and mix pieces that were never meant to match. Vintage finds, flea-market treasures and inherited tableware create a setting with far more character than a perfectly coordinated collection ever could.

Nostalgic floral patterns, hand-painted details and forgotten family silver feel especially at home on a summer table. When paired with contemporary tableware, these older pieces gain a fresh perspective while adding a sense of history and personality.

The Fruit napkins, designed by William Morris, bring 19th-century ornamental flourish to a summery tray of drinks and fruit.

Toast to the sun

Beautifully presented drinks double as decoration. Homemade lemonades, refreshing spritzes and berry-filled mocktails add color, sparkle and a festive touch to the table.

Serve them in statement glassware – colored or textured glasses catch the sunlight in delightful ways. Even the simplest drink feels special when garnished with a strawberry, a twist of citrus peel or a sprig of mint or rosemary. Frozen berries and edible flowers tucked into ice cubes are another easy way to elevate both everyday refreshments and celebratory cocktails.

A little slice of the tropics: the Piñacolada lamp by Goodnight Light is equal parts showpiece and gentle glow.

Captivating light

A summer table is at its most magical as the sun begins to dip below the horizon. Lanterns, candles and delicate string lights bring warmth to the evening and invite guests to linger long after dinner has ended.

Portable table lamps have also become a favorite for outdoor entertaining, and for good reason. Easy to move from indoors to the terrace, balcony or garden, they provide practical illumination while serving as elegant finishing touches to the table.
