At home with Ida Lauga: A Stockholm rowhouse full of life
Ida Lauga lives with her family in Stockholm, Sweden.
Hi Ida! You work with interiors in many different capacities – styling, designing, consulting. How did you find your way into this world?
“My journey really started in Paris, where I spent nearly a decade working on renovations, interior design and styling for companies, magazines and private homes. When I eventually moved back to Stockholm, I brought all of that with me. And our own home has always been part of the process too. We love doing things together: bouncing ideas, refurnishing, painting, building, thinking. It never really stops, and I wouldn't have it any other way.”
Vaarnii’s 1003 Hans pendant is made of Finnish pine.
Tell us about your home and family.
“We live in a small brick rowhouse from the 1960s, three floors, lots of personality. It’s me, my husband, our three kids (16, 12 and 8), our springer spaniel Ilse and our cat Seven. Big personalities in a tight space, so we’ve made it our mission to find smart ways for everyone to be comfortable.
My husband is French and we met in Paris. We eventually moved back to my hometown Stockholm about twelve years ago, when our daughter was one. It’s a wonderful mess of languages and people. There’s always someone coming over for dinner or a drink, just the way we like it.”
How would you describe your interior style?
“I hope it keeps evolving. But it lives somewhere in the sweet spot between Scandinavian and French, old and new, a bit quirky but still sophisticated.”
Vaarnii’s 001 Dining chair was designed by Fredrik Paulsen.
What’s inspiring you right now?
“Always food. We all love to cook, and our youngest son takes great pride in his salad dressing. Beyond that, photography, interesting angles, catching moments. Color combinations. Fashion and facades. Stockholm has such amazing colors. Honestly, I think I’m more inspired by things outside of interiors than within them. My Instagram is basically just food and puppies.”
The 001 stool serves perfectly not only as a seat but also as a side table.
Why do Vaarnii’s pieces feel right in your home?
“They’re exactly the kind of pieces that will live with us forever. Fully functional, but almost like works of art, ones you can climb on and build blanket forts with, without ever worrying about them breaking.”
Do you have a favorite from Vaarnii's collection?
“The 001 dining chair designed by Fredrik Paulsen is just a genius piece of design.”
The 018 Hoop table lamp pairs a solid wood base with a delicate shade.
And finally, what are your summer plans?
“My husband’s parents have the most beautiful house in the south of France, and we spend every summer there. They have a ceramic studio, a pool, and farmers markets and antique markets all around. It’s the summer dream, and we know how lucky we are.”
