Muuto’s Stacked storage furniture can be stacked in an endless number of ways

Muuto's Stacked shelving modules can be stacked on the floor, set on a podium or mounted on the wall.

Muuto’s popular series of shelving units, Stacked, was born of a desire to combine a unique design style with practicality. The infinitely adaptable storage system that also encourages creativity is the handiwork of architect and designer Julien de Smedt.

THE STACKED SYSTEM by the Danish brand Muuto is a modular storage system that lets you build anything from a floor-to-ceiling bookcase to a low side table, a closed wardrobe or an open wall shelf. And the possibilities go even further – Stacked is designed for endless expansion and easy variation.

”Design should always have a characteristic expression while serving an obvious function. I found that shelving systems often only fulfilled one of the two, and from there grew the idea for Stacked,” says architect and designer Julien de Smedt, who heads up the offices of JDS Architects in Copenhagen.

The Stacked collection also includes ready-made configurations, such as this spacious bookcase.

A space divider made of Stacked modules brings additional storage space.

The Stacked Office Storage bookcase offers practical space for office papers, folders and decorative objects.

The Stacked Hallway Storage is designed especially for practical use in entrance and hallway areas.

Stacked modules also work effortlessly as a bedside table.

Stacked modules adapt easily to a wide range of aesthetic preferences. They can form storage solutions that vary from clean-lined and evenly coloured arrangements to expressive, asymmetric compositions that combine different shades and shapes. The modules connect with simple metal clips, and leaving gaps between them is entirely possible — ideal for taller objects or even decorative plants.

Stacked also responds gracefully to changing living situations. The lightweight modules are effortless to move and reconfigure, much like arranging building blocks. They can be placed directly on the floor or on a separate base, and versions with back panels can also be mounted on the wall if preferred.

"I wanted to design a shelving system of modules in three sizes that can be arranged and rearranged in any way you’d like, making for a unique storage solution," de Smedt says.

The Stacked collection was designed by Belgian architect Julien de Smedt.

The modules are secured by metal clips that come in a range of colors.

The wall-mounted Mini Stacked 2.0 shelving modules are smaller versions of the Stacked modules.

The Mini Stacked modules make great wall shelving units in the kitchen, hallway, living room, or bedroom.

The collection consists of 34 different modules in three sizes. In addition to open versions, there are modules with back panels or doors, as well as acoustic panels available as add-on elements. The colour palette includes oak, white, grey and light grey, and the oak module can also be paired with a green or grey back panel.

Released in 2008, Stacked has showcased contemporary Nordic design around the world for nearly two decades. Over the years, the series has expanded to include the Mini Stacked collection of smaller, lighter wall-mounted modules, as well as pre-made configurations designed for spaces such as hallways and offices.
