Description

Louis Poulsen’s VL Studio wall lamp boasts a timeless, clean-lined look typical of Danish design. The luminaire is made of matt black-painted aluminium and mouth-blown, triple-layered opal glass that diffuses the light softly, providing a glare-free glow that instantly creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in any space. The dome of the wall lamp can be tilted 90 degrees to the side, allowing for a more flexible distribution of light. This wall lamp is mounted directly to the wall.

The VL Studio lighting family is based on a design originally created in the 1940s for Copenhagen’s Radiohus building, which houses the headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. The mastermind behind both the lamp and the building is architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, known for his functionalist architecture in Denmark. Like most of Lauritzen’s designs, Radiohus was a “gesamtkunstwerk”, and its interior, including lighting, was also created by the architect. Launched in 2022, the VL Studio luminaires derive from the lamps used outside of the studios to indicate whether recording was on either with a green or red light.

Vilhelm Lauritzen

Architect and designer Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was one of the most significant Danish architects of his era and a figurehead of Danish functionalism. Lauritzen’s work is still widely visible in various places around Denmark – the Nørrebro Theatre, Copenhagen’s Daells Varehus and the first terminal of Kastrup Airport are great examples of his modernist style. Lauritzen often designed also the furniture and lighting for his buildings, and some of his best-known design pieces are the Radiohuset lamps, designed for Frederiksberg’s radio building and produced by Louis Poulsen. “No life without aesthetics” was Lauritzens firmly held belief, and he considered architecture as a form of applied art. Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, founded by Lauritzen in 1922, is nowadays one of the most valued architectural offices of Denmark.
