Iittala’s Aalto vase is a veritable icon of Finnish design and glass art, continually enchanting fans of Nordic design with its organic, ambiguous form. Created by the legendary designer and architect Alvar Aalto, the vase was introduced to the international public in different sizes and colours at the World Fair in Paris in 1937. Also known as the Savoy vase, it has since become one of the most famous glass objects in the entire world.
The Aalto vase is hand-crafted and mouth-blown at the Iittala glassworks in Finland. Each vase is individually blown by skilled glassmakers into a cast-iron mould, then cut from the glass mass and hand-finished to its final shape. This high vase is made using a traditional bubble glass technique, where soda added between layers of molten glass traps tiny air bubbles inside the glass. The bubbles reflect light beautifully, making each vase a unique work of art. The base is adorned with a special engraving celebrating the Aalto vase’s 90th anniversary.
