Nikari’s Alvar tray takes its name from its designer, Alvar Aalto, who originally created the birch tray for a community center located in Seinäjoki, Finland. The stage is now a touch larger as the wooden tray joins the Tones of Modernism Collection, a collaboration between Finnish Design Shop and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection celebrates the opening of Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck on-view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from December 5, 2025, through April 5, 2026.
Made from sustainably grown Finnish birch, the tray receives a blue laminate top in honor of the exhibition. The blue hue—also known as “Alvar’s blue”—pairs beautifully with the palette of Helene Schjerfbeck’s works, bringing the quiet, tranquil beauty of her work into modern kitchens and dining spaces alike.
The blue Alvar tray is produced in a limited edition and available exclusively at Finnish Design Shop.
