A designer lamp is like a piece of jewelry that enhances the entire room. Sometimes, simply changing a lamp can transform the whole interior. We asked an expert from Louis Poulsen what to consider when selecting a designer lamp and which type of lamp is always a safe choice.
DANISH LOUIS POULSEN is a lighting manufacturer known for its ability to create unique and timeless aesthetics for homes around the world, decade after decade. In Finland and other Nordic countries, home lighting becomes especially important during the darker months of the year – particularly when the lighting is unpleasant or fails to meet the needs of the household. So, how should one choose the right lamp? We had the opportunity to ask an expert from Louis Poulsen for their advice.
In the Customer Service answers column, we address popular questions, offering solutions and inspiration that may benefit others as well. This time, the questions are answered by Pia Kinnunen, Area Sales Manager at Louis Poulsen.
1. How to choose the perfect designer lamp?
“When selecting a designer lamp, it's essential to consider its purpose—why you need it and how its design supports that purpose. Light has a direct impact on human well-being, so the right lamp can make a significant difference. A well-designed lamp won’t cause glare, even if it’s powerful. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for light intensity and color temperature, and consider whether dimming options can be added.

If you’re unsure whether the lamps in a room match stylistically, your personal preference for their appearance is often enough to confirm they’re the right choices. There’s no need to buy everything at once – lamps usually find their perfect spot over time. Table lamps are also available in rechargeable and weatherproof models, making them ideal for outdoor use, such as on a terrace or in the garden.
Why choose an authentic designer lamp? It’s responsibly crafted from durable materials, and its timeless design fits seamlessly into various interiors. If an accident happens, spare parts are easy to find, and the lamp retains its value for decades.”
2. How to create cozy lighting in a living room?
“Cozy lighting depends on factors such as the seasons, time of day, and how the room is used. The most important step is to consider how the lighting can serve all members of the household.
One trend in new construction is to combine the living room with an open-plan kitchen and sometimes even an entryway with access to a terrace. In such cases, a functional lighting plan might include dozens of light sources. However, in a standalone living room, there should be at least three light sources, with one of them featuring a dimmer – for example, a pendant lamp.
“A ceiling lamp isn’t always necessary; a well-designed setup can also rely on floor and table lamps.”
A ceiling lamp isn’t always necessary; a well-designed setup can also rely on floor and table lamps. Light sources should be positioned slightly opposite each other and at different heights to highlight surfaces and decorative details, such as artwork, while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. For efficient cleaning, a dimmer on the ceiling lamp allows for brighter light when needed.”

3. How has Louis Poulsen updated its designer lamps?
“Louis Poulsen has updated its classic lamps with modern electrical technology, such as replacing traditional screw-base bulbs with LEDs. Despite these updates, the materials and iconic designs remain unchanged. The lighting performance has even improved, as LEDs provide a more even and efficient light compared to traditional bulbs.
For instance, the Panthella series now includes a rechargeable and portable model with enhanced light efficiency and a built-in dimmer. Staying true to sustainable design principles, the integrated LED unit (LED module and circuit board) is always replaceable. Spare parts are easy to order, and it's recommended that a licensed electrician performs the replacement.”
