DESIGNED FOR high-end stays, Fjällen Lumière Penthouse enchants its guests not only with sweeping fell landscapes but also with its timelessly elegant interior. The apartment is located in a newly built property at the base of the western slopes of Levi, in Finnish Lapland, with direct access to the ski runs from the courtyard. The same building also houses the acclaimed Bistro West restaurant, adding to the ease and appeal of the stay.

Finnish Design Shop’s Studio was invited to collaborate on the interior design of the residence. We spoke with the apartment’s owner as well as Studio interior designer Riikka Soini-Ferraguto about the project.

“I hope that when guests step inside, they let out a sigh of delight – drawn in by the clarity of the space and the welcoming atmosphere,” the owner says.

The apartment’s surface materials are easy to maintain while remaining elegant and refined.

What kind of style and atmosphere were you hoping to create for the apartment?

The owner: “I was drawn to a Scandinavian look that feels refined and pared-back, with a subtle touch of Lapland’s magic and a sense of luxury. The goal was to create a cohesive space that’s clear and uncluttered, yet welcoming – somewhere guests can easily unwind after a day outdoors.”

What were your main wishes for the interior, considering it’s intended for rental use?

“I wanted the interior to stand the test of both time and use. The idea was to choose surfaces that are as easy to maintain as they are elegant. From the start, we also considered flexibility: the design should adapt to different groups of guests. For example, stools that serve as nightstands can easily double as extra seating when needed.”

The spacious living room flows seamlessly into the open kitchen, allowing for effortless cooking, conversation, and shared moments.

Upholstered in Tadao fabric, HAY’s Quilton sofas introduce softly rounded lines and generous comfort, finished with relaxed, tailored stitching.

How does Fjällen Lumière Penthouse stand out from other rental properties in Levi?

“It’s a true ski-in property. The slope of Levi fell rises directly in front of the building, and there’s also a restaurant located in the same property. The apartment is equipped to meet the expectations of discerning guests, and the interior conveys a sense of luxury and quiet sophistication.”

What was it like collaborating with Finnish Design Shop’s interior designer?

“The collaboration was effortless, and from the very beginning it felt like we were on the same wavelength. It was also smooth in the sense that nothing was ever pushed on me. I never felt that I had to go along with something I didn’t fully believe in.

It was wonderful to have a professional think through proportions with me and suggest solutions I wouldn’t have come up with on my own. I’d say that understanding spatial balance and ensuring the versatility of the furniture brought the greatest added value.”

What are your thoughts on the final result?

“I’m extremely happy with how it turned out – the interior is exactly what I had hoped for. It feels luxurious and visually engaging. My favorite view is from the kitchen, across the dining area and out toward the fell landscape. It’s a beautifully balanced and striking moment within the apartment.

I’m also very pleased with the living area. The sofa arrangement includes elements I wouldn’t have thought of myself, yet they truly elevate the space.”

“In a rental property, you have to think especially carefully about how materials will withstand use and how they can be maintained over time,” says Riikka Soini-Ferraguto, interior designer at Finnish Design Shop Studio.

The apartment features three bedrooms, two of which offer direct access to the terrace.

Riikka Soini-Ferraguto, you worked as the interior designer on this project in Levi. How does designing a leisure home or rental property differ from designing a private residence – if at all?

“When designing a leisure property that will also be rented out, the space needs to feel fully finished from the start, down to the smallest details. A private home is usually completed gradually, and the interior evolves over time. With a holiday rental, it’s the opposite: no one wants their getaway to be disrupted because an everyday essential is missing or there’s no hook to hang clothes at the end of the day.

In this project, the design process didn’t end with selecting furniture. Together with the client, we carefully considered everything the kitchen and bathrooms would need in terms of equipment and functionality.”

The project was carried out entirely remotely. What does remote design require from the designer and from the client?

“At Finnish Design Shop Studio, most of our interior design projects are actually done remotely. It usually works very well, as long as the client provides sufficiently detailed information about the property, including photographs, material specifications, and floor plans.

Naturally, remote work calls for strong spatial awareness and precision on the designer’s part – and occasionally some hands-on involvement from the client on site, if certain details can’t be fully understood from the materials alone.”

Located on the top floor, the apartment includes a spacious terrace where, with a bit of luck, you may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The landscapes of Levi are striking in every season.

Cabins in northern Finland are often associated with rustic log construction and a cozy, traditional chalet aesthetic. How did you introduce the desired sense of luxury and a contemporary edge to the interior of Lumière Penthouse?

“For this project, the aim was specifically to create a more contemporary expression of luxury rather than drawing on the conventional Finnish log-cabin look often associated with holiday homes in Lapland. We paid special attention to the material choices, as the quality of materials is something you can both see and feel.

The color palette was carefully curated and intentionally restrained, ensuring a cohesive overall look and a consistent atmosphere that flows seamlessly from one space to another.”
