Description

J41 chair is HAY’s relaunch of Børge Mogensen spindled armchair. Made of solid wood, the J41 chair’s lightweight yet stable structure makes it an excellent dining chair, and the curved backrest adds comfort to the seating pose. J41 merges together the most essential elements of Scandinavian design: beauty, durability and functionality.

J41 chair is part of HAY's 2011 relaunch of the Danish furniture classics originally made for FDB, the Danish Consumers’ Co-operative Society. FDB’s furniture production started in the 1940s and their main idea was functionalist and democratic design for the people. Thanks to industrial production, FDB was able to manufacture high-quality design furniture for ordinary people at relatively low prices.

In 2021, HAY renewed the surface treatments of its wood furniture by replacing their paints and lacquers with more environmentally friendly, water-based alternatives. Please note that due to this, natural wood furniture now comes with only one lacquer option instead of the previous two: the new water-based lacquer is glossier than the matte lacquer previously used, but slightly more matte than HAY’s previous clear lacquer.

Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) stands among Denmark’s most influential furniture designers and key pioneers of Danish modernism. Having studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Mogensen set out to create pieces defined by functionality, a stripped-back aesthetic and true accessibility. Shortly after graduating, he was appointed head of design at the FDB consumer cooperative, where the mission was clear: to produce practical, durable and affordable furniture for people across all walks of life.

Børge Mogensen – at the heart of Danish modernism

Børge Mogensen’s work is defined by a democratic mindset and an effortless command of human-centred proportions – he believed that great design should serve as many people as possible and stand the test of time.

Mogensen trained as a furniture designer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he studied under the renowned designer and architect Kaare Klint. He graduated in 1942 and began his career shortly afterwards at the FDB consumer cooperative.

Functionality and honest materials

Mogensen’s furniture can be described as both strikingly modest and immensely self-assured, and the same could be said of his personality. His work also reveals influences from folk art, lithography and Japanese woodblock prints.

Mogensen enjoyed working with traditional natural materials, but he was equally keen to explore new techniques and championed efficient industrial furniture production.

A pioneer of Nordic design

Throughout his career, Børge Mogensen collaborated closely with several Danish manufacturers. He is especially known for the furniture originally produced by the FDB consumer cooperative, now manufactured by FDB Møbler. Mogensen’s wooden furniture can also be found in the collections of Fredericia and Carl Hansen & Søn. Mogensen’s thinking had a lasting influence on how Nordic furniture design is understood today.

Over the course of his career, Mogensen received prestigious honours including the Eckersberg Medal and the C.F. Hansen Medal, and in 1972 he was awarded the British distinction Honorary Royal Designer for Industry.
