Description

The VLA62 Radio House mirror by Carl Hansen & Søn takes its name from its original location. Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen, a pioneer of Danish functionalism, the mirror was created for Copenhagen’s Radio House, an iconic building also designed entirely by Lauritzen. Like many of his architectural works, the Radio House was conceived as a "gesamtkunstwerk" – a total work of art where the architect designed every detail, including the interiors and furnishings.

The Radio House mirror’s solid oak frame is made from eight precisely carved individual pieces that are seamlessly joined together. The concave shape is then hand-sanded to a perfectly smooth finish, creating a frame that almost appears to embrace the glass within. The sculputral Radio House mirror adds warmth and elegance to any space, whether placed in an entryway or bedroom.

Vilhelm Lauritzen

Architect and designer Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) was one of the most significant Danish architects of his era and a figurehead of Danish functionalism. Lauritzen’s work is still widely visible in various places around Denmark – the Nørrebro Theatre, Copenhagen’s Daells Varehus and the first terminal of Kastrup Airport are great examples of his modernist style. Lauritzen often designed also the furniture and lighting for his buildings, and some of his best-known design pieces are the Radiohuset lamps, designed for Frederiksberg’s radio building and produced by Louis Poulsen. “No life without aesthetics” was Lauritzens firmly held belief, and he considered architecture as a form of applied art. Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, founded by Lauritzen in 1922, is nowadays one of the most valued architectural offices of Denmark.
