Description

Vitra’s Eames DAR armchair is also known as the Eiffel chair due to the graphical cross structure formed by its metal base. The name DAR comes from the words Dining Height Armchair Rod Base.

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames, the plastic Eames chairs are true design icons of the 1950s. Their popularity lies in the timeless, ergonomic design and various leg options. The original model with a fibreglass seat was the first industrially produced plastic chair. Today, the seat of the Eames chair is made of polypropylene.

Vitra launched the updated versions of the Eames chairs at the Milan Furniture Fair of 2015. Because the average human height has increased by almost 10 centimetres in the past 60 years, Vitra considered necessary to update the size of the classic chairs. Depending on the model, the length of the legs has been increased by about 20 mm, and the geometry of the seat has been carefully readjusted. The changes seem minimal, but they make the Eames chairs significantly more comfortable for today’s needs.

Charles & Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames were an American design duo whose work left a lasting mark on the history of modern design. Their output ranged from furniture to architecture, exhibitions and film, all united by a curious and experimental approach.

The Eameses’ design philosophy is defined by ergonomics, innovative use of materials and a playful yet timeless aesthetic. Many of their iconic designs, such as the Eames Lounge Chair and Eames Plastic Chairs, are now part of Vitra’s collection.

Charles & Ray Eames – the most iconic duo of modern design

Charles and Ray Eames were an American design couple whose work is virtually impossible to miss for anyone with an interest in design.

Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. He began studying architecture at Washington University and continued his education at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1940. It was at Cranbrook that he met his future wife Ray (née Kaiser), an artist and photographer from Sacramento, California. The couple married in 1941.

A celebration of multidisciplinary creativity

From 1941 onwards, Charles and Ray Eames experimented with moulded plywood furniture, and in 1946 their work was exhibited at MoMA in New York. In 1948, furniture manufacturer Herman Miller began producing their designs, and the following year they built the iconic Eames House in California. The remarkable building served not only as their home but also as a living exhibition space showcasing works by leading designers of the time.

In the 1950s, the Eameses increasingly turned their focus towards film and photography. Their work spanned furniture, exhibition design, short films and visual communication – always driven by experimentation and technical innovation.

Pioneers of 20th-century design

The impact of Charles and Ray Eames on Swiss manufacturer Vitra has been profound. From the very beginning, the foundation of Vitra’s collection has been built on Eames classics such as the Eames Lounge Chair, various versions of the Plastic Chair, the Hang it all coat rack and other iconic pieces.

Throughout their careers, Charles and Ray Eames received numerous accolades, including the British Royal Gold Medal and the American Institute of Architects’ Twenty-five Year Award. In 1985, the Industrial Designers Society of America named them the most influential designers of the 20th century. Ever prolific, Charles Eames passed away in St. Louis in 1978, with Ray following him exactly ten years later.
