What’s new: 1616 / arita japan’s Manz tea cup

Manz tea cups reflect the long-standing dialogue between Japanese and Danish design: a shared appreciation for simplicity, function, and refined materials.

Time and again, 1616 / arita japan has captured our hearts with its refined ceramic tableware where delicate form meets quiet balance. The latest addition to their collection is a series of thoughtfully crafted cups by ceramist Richard Manz, designed to elevate everyday rituals one sip at a time.

THE LONG TRADITION of Japanese ceramics lives on in the tableware of 1616 / arita japan. Founded in 2012, the brand seamlessly blends Japanese artisan traditions with European influences, crafting timeless tableware that finds its place in homes and tearooms worldwide.

If the brand's name seems a little puzzling at first, here’s a quick lesson: 1616 marks the year Korean potters introduced porcelain-making to Japan. Arita refers to the town on the southern island of Kyushu where it all began — a place still known today as the cradle of Japanese porcelain. Together, the name pays homage to both the brand’s heritage and the birthplace of Japanese porcelain.

1616 / arita japan’s bowls and cups are crafted in Arita, Japan’s historic porcelain capital.

A sophisticated addition now joins the ceramic collection: timeless tea cups that are based on the original sketches of ceramist Richard Manz.

The final designs were brought to life by his daughter, Cecilie Manz, in collaboration with 1616 / arita japan.

The latest additions to 1616 / arita japan’s ceramic collection are two tea cups, drawn from the original designs of the late Danish ceramist Richard Manz. Throughout his career, Manz created everyday objects that balanced sculptural form with functional clarity in the most natural way.

The cups were brought to life in close collaboration with his daughter, designer Cecilie Manz – a fitting partner to bring her father’s vision from paper to porcelain.

The Manz tea cup’s minimalist form is stripped of all that is unnecessary.

The Manz tea cup charms with its carefully considered proportions, which are a delight to the eye and a pleasure to hold. Available in various subtle tones that honor the natural beauty of porcelain, the cup is equally at home in festive settings and daily moments alike.

The Manz Hōjicha cup is specially designed for its namesake Japanese tea. The teapot is designed by Cecilie Manz.

The cup’s wide rim is carefully shaped to sit comfortably against the lips, enhancing the pleasure of every sip.

Another newcomer from Richard Manz is sure to delight tea lovers in particular. The Manz Hōjicha cup was designed for the beloved Japanese tea of the same name, known for its warm, toasty flavour. The cup’s subtly flared rim enhances the drinking experience, while its carefully balanced shape feels just right in the hand. The cup is perfect not only for hōjicha, but also for other teas or even your daily espresso.

The table is set – all that’s left for you to do is brew the tea!
