New arrivals from Marimekko: embroidery and electric blue

Marimekko vases: Mini vase electric blue, Flower vase caramel brown, and Umpu vase light grey.

Marimekko's 2022 pre-fall collection includes Carina Seth Andersson's vases in brand new hues: Mini in electric blue, Flower in caramel brown, and Umpu in light grey.

Marimekko's pre-fall collection is a celebration of humanity. Featuring bold prints perfected with surprising details and sumptuous hues, a strong influence of traditional handicrafts is present in the collection. Take a look at our favorites and find yours!

ALTHOUGH IT IS only June, Marimekko has already graced us with a little taste of their fall novelties by introducing their pre-fall collection. The collection's theme is humanity, which is reflected in the products in the design language, recycled materials, and the perfect imperfection of the human handprint. The first of the new products are already available at Finnish Design Shop, but keep your eyes peeled – there's a lot more to come later in the fall!

Marimekko Berry cushion cover and Berry throw

The Berry cushion cover is adorned with a pattern by Antti Kekki, combining printing and embroidery. The Berry throw is made of cotton using the basket weave technique.

Berry-picking season

Designed by Antti Kekki in 2021, the Berry cushion cover is made of cotton and decorated with a print pattern – as are most of Marimekko's cushion covers – but this time complemented also with embroidered details. The pattern was created with a collage technique using paper cut-outs in graphic shapes, and the inspiration behind it comes from secret berry picking spots and the mental maps we create to get to them. The textured, crewel-embroidered color blocks are truly the embodiment of the collection's theme of humanity!

Marimekko vases: Mini vase electric blue, Flower vase caramel brown, and Umpu vase light grey.

The Mini vase's blue and Flower vase's caramel brown shade complement each other perfectly.

Caramel and electric blue

The color scheme of the new collection is mostly quite harmonious and serene, but there are also some spots of color here and there: alongside brown, beige, and other soothing shades there are some brighter colors like electric blue. The super-popular vases designed by Carina Seth Andersson go from one extreme to the other: the tiny Mini vase is dressed in blue, while the Flower vase has taken on a beautiful caramel shade. Both the blue and brown vases are made by hand, and thus the tone of each individual vase is unique depending on, for example, the thickness of the glass.

The quilted Unikko bed cover is filled with light and voluminous wadding made of recycled polyester.

Wrap yourself in a field of flowers

Decorated with the classic Unikko pattern, Marimekko's quilted bed cover offers an easy way to give a fresh new look to the bedroom. Made of cotton and filled with recycled polyester, the double bedspread is tinted in off-white and beige. Although the pattern is graphic and instantly recognizable, the room's atmosphere remains calm thanks to the neutral, natural tones. The bedspread is also available in charcoal gray in a smaller size of 160 x 260 cm.

Marimekko Härkä duvet cover and pillowcase

Maija Isola's Härkä pattern from 1967 nods to constructivist art.

Taking the bull by the horns

Maija Isola is undoubtedly best known for Unikko, but did you know that she designed more than 500 printed fabric models for Marimekko? One of Isola’s slightly lesser-known patterns is the geometric Härkä, Finnish for “ox” or “bull”, designed in the 1960s. In the new Marimekko collection, Härkä is seen in lovely shades of pink and brown in products like cotton duvet covers and pillowcases. The duvet cover comes in two sizes: single and double. The pillowcases are sold separately, so you can conveniently buy as many as you like.

Marimekko Oiva mug in white, clay, powder, red

Unikko is one of Marimekko's best-known patterns, recognized all around the world. It adorns the Oiva mug in shades of beige, powder, and burgundy.

The lovely Oiva

Sami Ruotsalainen's modern classic, the Oiva tableware range, is an absolute must in every Marimekko collection. Of the new releases, the Design Stories team has especially been loving the Unikko-patterned Oiva mug in a superb combination of beige and off-white enlivened by pink and burgundy details. Lots and lots of new additions to the Oiva series are coming later in the fall.
