Alessi’s kettle 9093 – brewing joy for 40 years!
The 9093 kettle is a design classic created by Michael Graves in 1985.
ALESSI'S KETTLE 9093 is an irresistible design icon that delights in every detail. Its playful silhouette, inspired by influences from Art Deco to pop art and classic animation, makes it as much a sculptural statement as a kitchen essential.
Created in 1985 by American architect and designer Michael Graves, the kettle quickly became one of Alessi’s most beloved pieces. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, it returns with a fresh look: the familiar stainless steel reimagined in a sophisticated black finish.

According to Graves, the idea for the 9093 kettle arose from a rather unexpected insight. Alessi’s founder, Alberto Alessi, had noted that while Americans often needed a kettle for instant coffee, Italians, the French, and the Spanish, devoted to their espressos, rarely used one at all.
Yet he saw potential where others saw no purpose. Graves believed that a well-designed object could go far beyond its practical purpose. For him, the kettle was not just a tool for heating water, but an opportunity to bring beauty, joy, and imagination into everyday life. “A tea kettle can be more than an efficient device for boiling water; it can have an iconic value as well,” he said.
The most recognizable detail of the kettle 9093 is the small bird perched on its spout, ready to whistle when the water reaches its boiling point.
The steel kettle may also be used on induction hobs, and its wide base makes the water heat up faster.
This philosophy comes to life beautifully in the design of the kettle 9093. Far from being just a tool for boiling water, it was created to bring a sense of joy and playfulness to its users.
The whimsical form, artistic references, and the cheerful bird perched on the spout — ready to whistle when the water boils — make the kettle as delightful to look at as it is to use. It's a joyful design icon that brightens every tea moment, from the first cup of the morning to the calm of the afternoon.
