Discover your dream getaway – explore Piperi House in the Greek Cyclades
What: Piperi House
Location: Kýthnos, Greece
Completion: 2023
Gross area: 130m2 + 20m2 guest house
Main architect: Sigurd Larsen
PERCHED ON THE rocky slopes of Kýthnos Island, Piperi House initially appears to blend seamlessly with the traditional architecture of the Greek archipelago.
Like a gleaming white pearl amidst the rugged landscape, the structure echoes the authentic design of Cycladic villages, characterized by charming labyrinths of limestone houses interconnected by narrow staircases. However, a closer inspection reveals the unique allure of this complex – composed of four white stone cubes – unfolding its enchanting nature piece by piece.
Piperi House mirrors the traditional homes of Cycladic villages.
The cubic volumes are strategically placed to ensure that the outdoor areas always provide a sheltered nook, regardless of wind direction or intensity.
Narrow stone staircases, clad in local natural stone akin to the paths of nearby villages, weave a connection between the indoor and outdoor realms.
Endless movement
Drawing inspiration from the works of Dutch artist M.C. Escher, the white staircases linking the interior and exterior spaces evoke a sense of perpetual movement, adding a touch of surprise and playfulness to the building’s minimalist appearance. The shadows cast by the various segments of the building – ever-changing – amplify the intriguing effect of an optical illusion.
The dazzling white stone surfaces create a striking contrast against the sun-soaked palette of the Mediterranean landscape.
The classic stone staircases guide one's steps not only through serene indoor spaces but also among the cubic volumes situated on the rocky slope, from one terrace to another. The sun-soaked hues and textures of the Mediterranean landscape form a captivating interplay with the dazzling white monolithic stone surfaces.
Carefully placed windows frame the landscape into postcard-like scenes, inviting moments of pure contemplation and connection.
Piperi House is named after the uninhabited Piperi island located nearby.
Piperi House caters to the senses and satisfies a craving for aesthetics, all while expertly balancing functionality with an artistic flair. Nestled right by the open sea and perched on a sunlit rocky plateau, it truly captures the essence of a dream summer retreat. However, this idyllic location also brings its own set of architectural challenges.
Meticulous placement of the cubic elements ensures that outdoor spaces always provide a sheltered spot, depending on the wind’s direction and strength. The thick stone walls and their radiant white hue act as a natural buffer against the heat – as do the stone floors.

Postcard perfect
While designing Piperi House, the unique surroundings have been at the heart of every decision, from architectural influences and material choices to the building's placement in relation to its environment. Even the windows are strategically positioned to ensure that you can immerse yourself in the dreamlike views from any spot, at any time.
