Vitra's Bascule Highback lounge chair is where the aesthetics of fashion meets the precision of engineering. The loosely cut fabric cover drapes around the high-backed frame like a coat, and that comparison is no accident: the tailoring techniques were borrowed straight from the world of clothing design. Beneath those beautiful folds sits a clever tilt mechanism that responds to your weight, delivering exactly what the chair's name promises. "Bascule" is French for seesaw, and true to that, the chair tips with your movements from upright to almost horizontal without a single extra lever or button. The Bascule ottoman, sold separately, completes the comfort and gives your legs somewhere to go when you're fully reclined.

Berlin's Studio Πthought carefully about the chair's longer life, as well. The seat cushions are filled with V-Foam, a recyclable polyurethane foam developed by Vitra and BASF, the backrest is padded with PET fibre made from recycled bottles, and the permanent glued joints in the wooden frame have been replaced with solutions that can be repaired, replaced, or recycled.
