Lapuan Kankurit

Lapuan Kankurit – whose name means “Weavers of Lapua” – is a Finnish weaving mill specialising in linen and wool products. The brand creates versatile interior and table textiles, as well as bath and sauna products, crafted from genuine natural materials. Inspiration for the textiles comes from the purity and rugged beauty of northern nature, with both Finnish and international textile artists contributing to the designs.

Alongside a passion for good design, Lapuan Kankurit’s core principles include responsible production, continuous development of new textile innovations, and passing on weaving expertise to future generations.

Lapuan Kankurit – The bold moderniser of Finnish weaving heritage

The story of Lapuan Kankurit begins in 1917, when Juho Annala founded a felt boot factory by the Lankilankoski rapids in Lapua, western Finland. Industrial weaving took root in the 1930s with the arrival of the factory’s first weaving machines. Years later, Annala’s grandson Juha Hjelt followed in his footsteps, starting work at the mill at the age of 15. In 1973, together with his wife Liisa, he launched Lapuan Kankurit.

Today, the fourth generation – Esko and Jaana Hjelt – are at the helm. What started as a local weaving mill has grown into a globally recognised textile brand. Still a family-run business, Lapuan Kankurit champions human-scale production, responsible values and a fully transparent production chain.

Nordic tradition meets innovation

From the vast plains of the Ostrobothnia region in western Finland, Lapuan Kankurit continues to weave using time-honoured jacquard techniques – but today, these are enhanced with precision-driven modern technology. Resource efficiency is key, and the company actively invests in circular economy principles and locally sourced raw materials.

Among the many initiatives, Lapuan Kankurit is reviving the use of local Finnsheep wool, exploring natural dyeing methods and bringing nearly lost textile know-how back to life.

Textile design shaped by nature

The brand collaborates with both Finnish and international designers to create timeless, characterful textiles. These include Finnish creatives such as Matti Pikkujämsä and Elina Helenius, as well as Japan-born talents Aoi Yoshizawa and Akira Minagawa.

Material choices are grounded in traceability and exceptional quality. The long-staple linen, certified by Masters of Linen, is sourced from France and Belgium. Organic OEKO-TEX-certified cotton comes from a German spinner, and Tencel is imported from Austria.
