Description

GUBI's Lotus table lamp shows what Murano glassblowing can do in the right hands – and few hands were more capable than Carlo Nason's. Born into a Murano glassblowing family, the Italian designer devoted his life to exploring glass and everything it could do. The Lotus lamp is one of the loveliest answers he found: a lamp with quiet poetry that fills a room with soft, diffused light.

The Lotus table lamp first appeared in 1969 under the rather less romantic name LT305. The nickname came later from the shape of the luminaire, where four individually mouth-blown glass shades nest inside one another like the petals of a lotus. A carefully considered, almost invisible steel structure holds the shades together while protecting the bulb. The original LT305 lamp was made for only a few years, which is precisely what turned it into a collector's prize. GUBI has now brought the iconic lamp back, staying as close to Nason's design as possible and touching only the inner structure, where a few small changes have made the lamp steadier still.

Carlo Nason

Carlo Nason (1935–2026) was one of Italy's most respected and best-known lighting designers. He was born into a Murano glassblowing family and was introduced to its craft traditions early on at the family's glassworks. That background led him naturally into the golden age of Italian design, where he brought together the centuries-old techniques of Murano and the new ideals of the post-war avant-garde. His work shows both the influence of the Space Age and echoes of Art Deco, and his lamps, sculptures, and vases are held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Corning Museum of Glass.
