Nikari is a Finnish furniture company renowned for its beautifully crafted wooden furniture, created with a deep commitment to sustainable design. The company was founded in 1967 by master cabinetmaker Kari Virtanen. In its early years, Nikari collaborated closely with some of the greatest icons of Finnish design and architecture, including Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck. Nikari: Finnish furniture built to last
Founded in 1967 by master cabinetmaker Kari Virtanen, Nikari has grown from a one-man carpentry workshop into one of the most respected names in Finnish wood design. Raised in Southern Ostrobothnia, Virtanen learned his craft alongside master artisans and quickly earned a reputation as a skilled model carpenter.
From the very beginning, the goal of Nikari – established when Virtanen was just 19 – was to create long-lasting wooden furniture crafted with care, character and a deep respect for the living material of wood. Each piece reflects the human touch and timeless sensibility that defines the brand.
Woodworking traditions with a modern spirit
In its early years, Nikari collaborated with legends of Finnish design such as Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck, cementing its reputation as a maker of beautifully crafted, enduring furniture.
Today, Nikari’s collections are shaped by a diverse group of designers – including international stars like Cecilie Manz, Jasper Morrison and Alfredo Häberli – each interpreting the brand’s quiet elegance in their own unique way.
From Fiskars to the world
Since 1993, Nikari has called the Fiskars artisan village home. Located in Southern Finland, nestled in an old industrial building by the river, the workshop is surrounded by nature – and even powered by it, thanks to the nearby Fiskars River, which provides electricity to the studio.
All Nikari products are made from certified wood species grown in Northern Europe. The manufacturing process is rooted in close collaboration with a local sawmill, ensuring traceability and the responsible use of materials throughout.
