LAYERED is a Stockholm-based interior brand founded in 2015 that has quickly risen to become one of the most exciting design names in Scandinavia. The brand is best known for its rugs, where a strong visual identity meets artistic expression and time-honoured craftsmanship.
LAYERED began when its founder and creative director, Malin Glemme, was searching for a high-quality, environmentally conscious designer rug for her own home. Frustrated by the lack of suitable options on the market, Glemme decided to design a rug herself and have it handmade in India. The rug soon appeared in the pages of a Swedish interior magazine and attracted significant attention – so much so that Glemme went on to establish her own interior brand.
Inspired by the world of fashion
With a background in fashion, Malin Glemme approached rugs much like garments. According to her philosophy, a rug should be the focal point of an interior rather than a mere background element – an idea that continues to guide the brand’s design today. Over the years, LAYERED’s collections have featured everything from the bold, graphic use of colour by Evelina Kroon to the playful and expressive illustrated world of Poppykalas.
Through these designer collaborations, LAYERED brings art into everyday living and broadens the idea of what Scandinavian rug design can look like.
A tradition of craftsmanship and respect for materials
LAYERED rugs are handmade in Bhadohi, India – a region renowned for hand-knotted and handwoven rugs since the 16th century. For the brand, craftsmanship is not merely a production method but an essential part of the design’s value. Each rug tells a story of its maker, its materials and the time invested in its creation.
When it comes to materials, LAYERED prioritises natural fibres and recycled raw materials. Wool, jute and other durable fibres are carefully selected to ensure a result that is both high-quality and made to last.
