Flos – a laboratory of modern lighting
The story of the Italian brand Flos began in the early 1960s, when Dino Gavina and Sergio Gandini set out to rethink what lighting could be. Founded in 1962, Flos soon came under the leadership of Sergio Gandini, and later his son Piero Gandini, who steered the company into the new millennium.
From the very beginning, Flos has been driven by a desire to bring together cutting-edge design and technological innovation. Today, the collection spans an impressive range of pendant lights, table lamps and floor lamps, from iconic 1960s classics to the latest contemporary designs.
The cornerstones of Flos
Flos’s early identity was shaped by close collaborations with masters of Italian design. Landmark pieces such as the Arco floor lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the 2097 chandelier by Gino Sarfatti, and the Seki-Han lamps by Tobia Scarpa quickly propelled Flos onto the international stage.
The influential MoMA exhibition in 1972, dedicated to a new design mindset emerging from Italy, further cemented Flos’s reputation as an avant-garde and forward-thinking force.
New generations and a global outlook
From the 1980s onwards, Flos has continually refreshed its vision by collaborating with new generations of designers. Philippe Starck’s Rosy Angelis lamp became a design phenomenon of its time, while later the collection has been enriched by contemporary voices such as Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic and Michael Anastassiades.
By combining industrial-scale production with an experimental design ethos, Flos has managed to stay relevant and influential across decades.
