Fiskars – Finnish craftsmanship since 1649
The story of Fiskars begins in western Uusimaa in 1649, when the Fiskars ironworks was founded to serve the growing iron industry. In 1783, the ironworks was converted into a copper works, with production continuing until the nearby copper mine closed in 1802.
In 1822, pharmacist Johan Julin purchased the entire ironworks and the surrounding village. Under his leadership, the operation was developed further and production focused on iron refinement. In 1932, Fiskars established Finland’s first fine forging workshop, where knives, forks and scissors began to take shape.
The global rise of the orange scissors
Launched in 1967, the orange-handled Fiskars scissors are among the brand’s most iconic creations. Originally, the scissors were meant to be black, red or green. However, when the first prototypes went into production, the machine operator used up the remaining orange plastic left in the machine. As a result, the scissors were produced in four colours – with black and orange quickly becoming favourites. When the colour range was later streamlined, an internal vote sealed the decision: orange it would be. Fiskars Orange was officially registered as a trademark in Finland in 2003 and in the United States in 2007.
Today, the scissors collection comes in a wide array of colours and patterns, while the signature orange has found its way into many other Fiskars products as well.
From kitchen to garden – everyday tools made to last
Fiskars’ best-known products also include garden tools, knives, and cookware designed for demanding daily use. Many of Fiskars’ pots and pans are still made in Finland, with a strong focus on even heat distribution, ease of use and carefully selected materials.
What unites all Fiskars products is thoughtful design, durable construction and ergonomic comfort – making everyday tasks smoother, simpler and more enjoyable.
