String System – the world-famous modular storage classic

String System is a timeless icon of Scandinavian design, first dreamed up in 1949 by young Swedish architects Nils “Nisse” Strinning and his wife Kajsa Strinning for a bookshelf competition held by Bonnier publishing house. Originally conceived as a lightweight and easy-to-assemble bookcase, the design is built around a simple ladder-like structure paired with shelves, cabinets and other components – the result is a sleek, endlessly adaptable shelving system that evolves with your space and lifestyle.

Crafted in Sweden

String System has been in continuous production since its launch and is one of Sweden’s best-known design exports. Today, the system is produced by String Furniture, founded in 2004 to carry on the legacy of Nisse and Kajsa Strinning. Each piece is still made in Sweden, with a strong focus on sustainability: 95% of String Furniture’s products are manufactured locally using renewable, recyclable or recycled materials.
