Fritz Hansen, manufacturer

Fritz Hansen

Fritz Hansen is an internationally well-known design brand which was founded in Denmark already in 1872. Its design philosophy is based on the same principles as over 150 years ago: Fritz Hansen believes that a single piece of furniture or lighting can change the ambience of a whole room and enhance the happiness and well-being of people inhabiting the space. Fritz Hansen’s collections range from Danish design classics by Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm to contemporary pieces by designers such as Jaime Hayón and Cecilie Manz.

Fritz Hansen – over 150 years of Nordic design heritage

The story of Fritz Hansen began in Copenhagen in 1872, when cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen founded his own company. By 1885, he had opened a furniture factory under his own name, and within just a few years, the workshop had blossomed into a thriving enterprise, crafting furniture for the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court, Copenhagen City Hall and the university library.

In the early 20th century, Fritz’s son Christian Hansen pioneered new steam-bending techniques, helping the company become a global trailblazer in moulded and laminated wood, as well as a leading force in the evolution of Scandinavian design.

Masters of modern design

During the 1940s and 1950s, Fritz Hansen joined forces with some of the biggest names in Danish design, including Hans J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen and Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen’s iconic chairs – such as the Ant, Series 7 and the Egg lounge chair – remain among the brand’s best-known pieces to this day.

From the 1960s onwards, Fritz Hansen expanded its production and firmly established itself as a leading international design brand. Collaborations with designers like Bruno Mathsson, Piet Hein and Verner Panton brought innovative and daring shapes into the collection.

In the 21st century, Fritz Hansen has welcomed a new generation of designers, including Cecilie Manz and Piero Lissoni, who have continued to interpret the brand’s design philosophy through a modern lens.

From one generation – and one home – to the next

At the heart of Fritz Hansen’s design philosophy is an uncompromising dedication to quality – seen in its choice of materials, craftsmanship, and the longevity of its products. Thanks to their timeless aesthetic, Fritz Hansen classics are passed down from one generation to another, and are highly sought-after on the vintage market. Sustainability and circularity are woven into the brand’s DNA, supported by practices like spare parts availability and long product warranties.
