Tias Eckhoff

Mathias Gerhard "Tias" Eckhoff (1926 - 2016) was a Norwegian industrial designer whose influence has made Scandinavian design a concept around the world. Eckhoff graduated as a ceramic artist from the Norwegian State College of Art and Design in 1945. In 1962, he designed his first cutlery collection, called Maya, which has since been selected by Phaidon Design Classics as one of the 999 best design objects in the world. In addition to cutlery, Eckhoff has also designed furniture.

Tias Eckhoff was inspired by the idea of creating beautiful and functional everyday objects to make people's everyday lives more enjoyable. His work has won numerous awards, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954, 1957 and 1960, the Lunning Prize and the Norwegian Jacobprisen. Eckhoff's work has been represented in many museums, including New York's MOMA and London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
